I do love being exposed to innovative uses of non-traditional textiles, specifically in the field of fashion. So I was excited to be introduced to Alba Prat's work. While this neoprene garment is not particularly realistic, it is beautiful. I cannot figure out how she manages to take such a sculptural and somewhat cold-feeling design concept and make it seem soft and almost cozy. There's just something pillowy about the whole thing. I like it. You?

Leave A CommentHello Everyone. I hope you have been enjoying a wonderful turkey-induced long weekend, as I have. In light of the mini vacation we are all having, I'm not going to go on and on about any topic today. I have however come across something really cool that I would like to share with you, the Fluid Dress. Textiles come in all forms, right?
Have a wonderful weekend.
Enjoy!

If you're lucky enough to live in the ever exciting San Francisco Bay area, you should take an afternoon to visit the textile exhibit r It's been up since July and runs until January 9, 2011. If you're at all interested in historical textiles and various cultural fabrics, this sounds like it could be pretty great.
To Dye For features over 50 textiles and costumes from the Fine Arts Museums’ comprehensive collection of textiles from Africa, Asia and the Americas. A truly cross-cultural presentation, the exhibition showcases objects from diverse cultures and historical periods, including a tie-dyed mantle from the Wari-Nasca culture of pre-Hispanic Peru (500–900 A.D.), a paste-resist Mongolian felt rug from the 15th–17th century and a group of stitch-resist dyed 20th-century kerchiefs from the Dida people of the Ivory Coast. These historical pieces are contrasted with artworks from contemporary Bay Area artists. The exhibition highlights several recent acquisitions, including important gifts such as a pair of ikat-woven, early-20th-century women's skirts from the Iban people of Sarawak, Malaysia and two exquisite hand-painted and mordant-dyed Indian trade cloths used as heirloom cloths by the Toraja peoples of Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Since I'm all the way over on the east coast, I expect someone to check this out and report back!

A textile topic that I don't often cover is Wall Coverings. I'm not sure why. I love wallpaper. Beautiful, colorful, and often times playful, it's such a lovely addition to a room.
When I was in school, ummm... a few years ago...., not too many of my print designer friends were choosing to head in this direction. I'm not sure if there just wasn't too much of a job market in the wallpaper industry or they simply preferred to design prints for clothing. Regardless, I feel like today there seems to be more textile folks entering this area of the industry. Why is that? Advances in technology, perhaps? I mean there are all kinds of cool "wall stickers" and home interior mural art that allows a more trendy and funky approach to home design.
In an attempt to highlight this often neglected area of the textile industry, I wanted to share with you all , an Australian company that works with some amazing textile designers to create some pretty awesome wallpaper.
Are you a wallpaper designer? How'd you get started? What do you love about it? We'd love to hear from you!
